Biography

Born in Paris in 1972, PAPA MESK has been a graffiti artist since 1986 and a founding member of the UTP crew (Underground Tribal Painterz) since its early days, alongside the other artists Pict, Ranx, Epic, Number 6, Pop aka DanyDan, Move, Reas and Hem. A tagger, graffiti artist, rapper and beatmaker all rolled into one, he has witnessed the evolution of Graffiti in Paris, from the wastelands of Stalingrad to the palisades of the Louvre, via London (Westbourne Park), Amsterdam (Flevopark) and Barcelona.

Passionate about art and calligraphy, he obtained in 1995 a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne), which enabled him to broaden his artistic palette and approach to art. And although he quickly became noticed for his prolific activity in the street during the 90's and the style of his tags, the breadth of his work and techniques naturally led him to use canvas as a new medium in the studio.

Able to create monumental works on walls as well as a precise and rigorous work on his canvases, Papa Mesk experiments different techniques and bright colors in his own style. His canvases are composed instinctively by the accumulation of tags, with a palette of saturated colors. Every drop, splinter and drip is made with a meticulous attention, enabling their perfect integration into the final composition of his artworks. With more than 30 years' experience in Graffiti, he has acquired a real signature that characterizes his style and unequivocally asserts his "Old School / New School" authenticity.
