Biography

Born on 10 March 1950, EPSYLON POINT is a pioneering painter of French urban art. He is also recognized as the pioneer of colour stencilling from 1983 onwards. After graduating from the Beaux-arts in Dijon in 1979, he started out as a photographer and performer. But it was at the end of the 1970s that he discovered his vocation for spray paint during a performance: "I had the impulse to cover a screen on which I was projecting images with black paint. I picked up a can of spray paint and it was like a flash. While his first colour stencils date back to 1983, between 1979 and 1985 he worked as a graffiti artist. It wasn't until 1983 that he developed his stencil technique alongside his friend LaSigne, when he took over the Balard district in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.

In 1985, as a pioneer of French street art, he took part in the first gathering of the graffiti and urban art movement organised by VLP in Seine-Saint-Denis, in the town of Bondy, with VLP, Jef Aérosol, Miss. Tic, Blek le Rat, Speedy Graphito, SP38... After the success of the 1980s, he decided to move to Turin in the early 1990s, where he trained a number of artists in stencil techniques. It was only at the end of the 1990s that Epsylon Point returned to France. It was a cold shower: the law had become tougher on urban artists. While some of his peers were on trial, he took up residence in a studio that allowed him to produce without constraints, store his canvases and prepare his stencils.

Since 2000, his work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows, both nationally and internationally. He has influenced many artists on the urban scene, becoming a "living legend of street art in France" according to C215. For more than 40 years he has never stopped protecting and preserving himself from the art market́, hence his preference for expressing his art in the street. Anartistic to the core, a figure of the politically incorrect, Epsylon Point is interested in the human condition, global conflicts, societal issues as well as eroticism and music. Through his work, he deals with the great human tragedies, the perversity of capitalist systems and denounces dictatorships.

Clearly, he develops on canvas the subjects he has painted in the street with the same conviction. His technique is based on abstract backgrounds painted freehand, onto which he places stencils often inspired by news photos or political slogans.
